THE CAIRNS GOLF COURSE

The first round on the Cairns course                            Mowing underway during Autumn 2011                         Does Barry make it over the water?

The Cairns Golf is designed to be a fun golf course, with strategy being a key objective whilst taking in some stunning views of both the McKenzie Basin and the Tekapo area. The 9 hole course invites the player to “go for the green”, but the penalty for failure may be severe. There is always a “bail out “ option . You don’t have to go for the dramatic shot and playing conditions on the day may be a key factor in the decision.

The design concept is similar to many of the old Scottish courses. The greens were “discovered“ where there is some shelter and good grass was already established. From there we worked backwards to find the teeing area.  No soil has been moved, except to level the tees.  This is golf at its purest, reminiscent of Golf in Scotland where the game has its origins. What you have on this course was always here. All we did was cut the grass to define the fairways. We have tried to preserve what has been here for a long time, including the 70 year old post distance markers on the 9th hole.

At the moment friends and family are playing the course, to test the design. Permanent greens have just been laid in anticipation for a summer 2012 opening. From the time the new greens are playable the Course is planned to be open to the Public and Members, which will enhance the rapidly growing range of activities that Tekapo offers.

We are excited about the course. Enjoy the golf, enjoy the strategy and enjoy the outstanding views.
