THE CAIRNS - Design Philosophy
A sense of open space, the clearest air possible and a new awareness of the colour blue are what might initially strike visitors to Lake Tekapo. Next, the mountains, lake, golden expanses of tussockland and wide, wide sky will awe them to silence. And then, little by little, the visitors will become infused with a sense of the peace of the place and they’ll begin to understand what holds locals here for a lifetime. It is this open, natural environment and sense of peace that has inspired the design of The Cairns.
Stage One of The Cairns comprises only 28 building platforms and 24 units on an elevated north-facing slope to the south of the main road. Many will be sited overlooking man-made lakes and reserves. There are views past Mt John and down the lake and, from some sites, views to the south-west of the mountains of Mt Cook National Park. The Cairns has been designed to meld into the natural landscape and have minimal environmental impact while also providing community services and facilities within walking distance for residents. Design objectives include:
-
creating a distinct character for The Cairns that respects the essential ‘Tekapo’ spirit and history
-
ensuring built forms all reinforce and complement the natural environment
-
preserving and enhancing vistas from within the site, and of the site from afar
|
|
-
creating a carbon-neutral development following environmentally sustainable design and building practices
-
incorporation of reserve areas, lakes, native flora, and accessways designed for pedestrians and cycles
-
creating liveable, comfortable, safe and attractive spaces for people
